Oil palm
The one crop sold at home, in bottles and jugs Cameroonians buy
Oil palm covers 15,240 hectares and is the crop most Cameroonians actually meet. Unlike the rubber and the bananas, which leave the country, the palm oil is sold at home.
Three mills at Mondoni, Idenau and Illoani press between 18,000 and 19,000 tons of low free fatty acid palm oil a year, plus around 600 tons of palm kernel oil. Low free fatty acid matters because it is the measure of how fresh the fruit was when it reached the mill, and it is what separates cooking oil from industrial grade.
It reaches households in one-litre bottles and five- and twenty-litre jugs, and goes to local manufacturers in bulk.
