Banana

The smallest planted area and by far the largest tonnage

Banana is the smallest of the three by area, at 4,525 hectares, and the largest by weight: between 90,000 and 110,000 tons a year, roughly five times the rubber tonnage off a fifth of the land.

It ships under three grades. MAKOSSA is the premium mark, with SAWA and TIKO alongside it, and all three go to the export market.

The crop also draws on the European Union's Banana Accompanying Measures, a support scheme set up to help traditional supplier countries adjust as EU import tariffs fell.
